Why Engineered Hardwood Stands Out

Real wood that goes where solid cannot

Engineered hardwood flooring is real wood: a sawn or sliced hardwood surface layer bonded over a cross-ply or multi-layer core. It looks and feels like solid hardwood, and the layered core makes it more stable through the humidity swings of a Canadian winter. That stability is why engineered is what we sell for condos, concrete slabs and many basements.

In simple terms: the top layer is the wood you see and can sand; the core underneath keeps the plank flat.

Species and looks

  • White oak and European oak: the largest part of our range, in smooth and wire brushed finishes.
  • Red oak: warmer tones and a more open grain.
  • Hard maple: a lighter wood with a quieter grain.
  • Hickory and pecan: strong colour variation and a rustic character.
  • American black walnut and European ash: darker walnut tones and pale ash.

Formats: mostly plank, from 3-1/2 inch boards up to 15-3/4 inch Biyork planks, with 5 inch and 7-1/2 inch the most common widths. Herringbone comes from brands including Vidar, Anderson Tuftex, Biyork, Fuzion and Grandeur, and chevron from Vidar and Purparket.

The specs that matter

  • Wear layer (veneer): the hardwood on top, mostly 1.2 mm to 4 mm, with a few 1 mm boards and up to 6 mm on some Anderson Tuftex boards. A thicker layer leaves more wood for sanding and refinishing later.
  • Thickness: mostly 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch overall, with a few thinner click boards and thicker 13/16 inch boards.
  • Finish and texture: smooth, brushed, wire brushed and hand scraped, from ultra matte to semi gloss.
  • Grade: cleaner grades show fewer knots and less colour variation; character grades show more.
  • Installation: many boards can be nailed, stapled, glued or floated, and some lines from Canadian Standard, Green Touch and Power Dekor click together.
  • Radiant heat: many boards are approved over hydronic (water-based) in-floor heat; a few are not. We check the maker's guide for your system.
  • Warranty: mostly 25 to 35 year residential finish warranties, some with lifetime structural cover.

Where engineered works

Main floors, bedrooms, condos over concrete, and basements where the maker approves below grade use, which many of our boards do. It is the hardwood we recommend over in-floor heat when the board is approved for it.

Not the right floor for bathrooms and laundry rooms, and anywhere water can sit. For those rooms, look at waterproof wood, vinyl plank or porcelain tile. Our advice: if the subfloor is concrete, below grade or heated, choose engineered over solid hardwood.

Engineered hardwood brands and collections

  • Fuzion: Patina, Summit Ridge, Nouveau Renaissance and Outer Banks, mostly oak, many in 7-1/2 inch planks.
  • Anderson Tuftex: Imperial Pecan, Grand Estate, Noble Hall, Coast To Coast and European Ash.
  • Vidar: American white oak and American black walnut, including herringbone and chevron and click planks.
  • Pravada: European white oak in 7-1/2 to 9-1/2 inch planks.
  • Biyork: European oak and hickory, up to 15-3/4 inch wide.
  • Canadian Standard: Origins Oak, Brand Surfaces hickory and Boen.
  • Also on display: Grandeur, Green Touch, Twelve Oaks, Shaw, Woden, Richmond, GoodFellow and NAF.

Still Have Questions?

Quick answers to the questions homeowners ask most before buying.

Is engineered hardwood real wood?
Yes. The surface layer is real hardwood, bonded over a cross-ply or multi-layer core. It looks and feels like solid hardwood.
Can engineered hardwood go in a basement?
Many of our engineered boards are approved below grade by their makers. The slab must be dry and flat, and we check the approval for the board you choose.
Can engineered hardwood be refinished?
It depends on the wear layer, the hardwood on top. Most of our boards carry 1.2 mm to 4 mm, and a thicker layer leaves more wood for sanding. Tell us how long you plan to keep the floor and we will suggest a layer to match.
Can engineered hardwood go over in-floor heating?
Many of our boards are approved over hydronic (water-based) radiant heat, and a few are not. Tell us your heating type and we will check the maker's guide.
What is the difference between engineered and solid hardwood?
Both are real wood on top. Engineered has a layered core that keeps it more stable, so it suits concrete, condos, basements and in-floor heat. Solid is one piece of wood, nailed to a wood subfloor on or above grade.
Do you carry herringbone engineered hardwood?
Yes, from brands including Vidar, Anderson Tuftex, Biyork, Fuzion and Grandeur, and chevron from Vidar and Purparket.
Do you install and deliver engineered hardwood?
Yes. Our in-house crews install across Ontario, and we deliver anywhere in Canada, to your door or to the nearest transport company terminal.
Where can I see engineered hardwood?
At our Mississauga store at 700 Dundas St E, Unit 3-4 (905-277-2227) and our Barrie store at 112 Saunders Rd, Units 1-4 (705-726-2272).
