That is the honest sales pitch for solid wood: nothing else we sell has a hundred-year track record, because a full 3/4 inch board can be sanded back to new again and again, through every fashion and every family the house will ever hold.
The equally honest caveat is that solid hardwood has rules. It wants a wood subfloor to nail into, a room on or above grade, and steady indoor humidity. Respect the rules and it outlives everything; break them and it cups, gaps or squeaks. Our job is to tell you plainly which side of that line your project is on.
Where solid hardwood belongs, and where it does not
It belongs: on main and upper floors over a plywood or board subfloor, which describes most of Barrie's detached housing, from the older streets near the waterfront to newer two-storeys in the south end. Nailed down properly, a solid floor is quiet, repairable and permanent.
It does not belong: in basements or below grade, over concrete, or on in-floor heating. Moisture and radiant cycling move solid boards more than any finish can hide. The species on our solid wall
Red oak and white oak
The traditional Ontario floor and the bulk of our solid range. Red oak brings warm tones and pronounced grain, and it is the natural match when you are extending the original floors in an older Barrie home. White oak runs cooler and slightly harder, and takes modern stains beautifully.
Decision line: matching existing floors, red oak; starting fresh with a modern tone, white oak.
Maple and hickory
Maple is the bright, fine-grained Canadian classic, a clean canvas that suits minimal rooms. Hickory is the hardest species we stock in solid, with dramatic colour movement board to board, made for households that are rough on floors.
Decision line: maple for calm and bright, hickory for toughness with character.
Birch, cherry and the exotics
Beyond the staples we stock solid birch and cherry, plus select exotics such as jatoba and teak for buyers after deep natural colour and exceptional hardness. These are smaller programs, so ask about current availability at the store.
Decision line: exotics reward the patient buyer; confirm stock before you fall in love.
Mills, widths and finishes
Our solid range is anchored by Canadian milling: Appalachian Flooring and Wickham Hardwood, both Quebec mills with deep colour programs, alongside Bruce Flooring, the long-running North American name, with Canadian Standard, Sunca and Tosca rounding out the wall.
Boards run the classic 3/4 inch thickness in 4 and 5 inch widths, the proportions that nail down tight and stay flat in a solid construction. Finishes go from smooth satin and semi-gloss to wire-brushed textures that hide winter grit, almost all factory-finished so the floor is walkable the day it goes down, with site-finish an option when you want a custom stain or a continuous look across old and new boards.
Why the installation is half the purchase

Stairs to match. A solid floor deserves solid treads and nosings in the same species and stain, and our Barrie stair crews build them as part of the same job.
Honest about the alternative. When a room fails the solid-hardwood rules, we say so at the quote and spec engineered instead. Selling you the wrong floor costs us more than the sale is worth.
Solid hardwood questions we hear in Barrie
How many times can solid hardwood be refinished?
A 3/4 inch solid board carries enough wood above the tongue for several full sandings, which in practice means generations of use. This is the core advantage over every other floor type and the reason solid hardwood adds lasting value to a house.
Why do hardwood floors gap in a Barrie winter?
Heating season drives indoor humidity down and the boards shrink sideways, opening hairline gaps that usually close again in summer. A humidifier keeps it modest. If your home runs very dry, or has a wood stove, tell us; it affects which species and width we recommend, or whether engineered is the safer buy.
Can solid hardwood go in my basement or over concrete?
No, and anyone who says otherwise is selling you a callback. Solid wood needs a nailable wood subfloor on or above grade. For basements and slabs, engineered hardwood or vinyl plank gives you the look without the failure.
Factory finished or site finished, which is better?
Factory finishes are harder and the room is usable immediately, which is why most of our solid range is prefinished. Site finishing wins when you need a custom stain or a continuous surface across patched and original boards. We quote both honestly.
Is solid hardwood worth it over engineered?
When the room qualifies and you plan to stay, yes: no other floor matches its refinishing life. If you may move within a few years, or the room breaks any of the rules above, a thick-veneer engineered board delivers the same look and most of the lifespan with none of the risk.
