Ceramic Tile in Mississauga & Barrie | Wall & Floor

Ceramic Tile in Mississauga & Barrie | Wall & Floor

Ceramic tile is the practical choice for walls, backsplashes, tub surrounds and lighter-traffic floors: easy to cut, easy to set, and glazed in more colours and gloss levels than porcelain. The trick is buying the right one for the job, because a wall tile sold as a floor tile will not last. Every ceramic line we stock is displayed by use at our Mississauga store on Dundas St E and our Barrie store on Saunders Rd, with the rating printed right on the board.

Why Ceramic Tiles Stands Out

The most common ceramic complaint we hear is not about looks. It is a glossy wall tile that went down on a laundry room floor and chipped at the corners, or a floor tile that was bought for a shower wall and turned out heavier than the installer wanted to hang. Ceramic is a great product in its lane; the job is knowing where the lane is.

In simple terms: ceramic is a clay tile fired at a lower temperature than porcelain, with a glaze on top that carries the colour and the pattern. The body is softer and absorbs more water, which makes it lighter, easier to cut with a snap cutter, and the better choice for walls and backsplashes. It is also the reason porcelain takes over once you get to wet floors and heavy traffic.

Where ceramic is the right tile

  • Kitchen backsplashes: subway, picket, square and handmade-look glazed tile in whites, greens, blues and terracotta tones. Ceramic glazes have more depth and colour range than most porcelain, which is why designers still specify it here.
  • Bathroom walls and tub surrounds: glazed ceramic sheds water and wipes clean. Use a waterproof membrane behind it in showers and it will last for decades.
  • Powder rooms, laundry rooms and bedroom floors: floor-rated ceramic (PEI 3 or higher) handles light residential traffic well.
  • Rental units and budget renovations: ceramic installs faster and cuts cleaner, so labour comes down with it.

Wall tile and floor tile are not the same product

Every ceramic tile carries a PEI wear rating. PEI 1 and 2 are wall only. PEI 3 is residential floors. PEI 4 covers busy residential floors and light commercial. If the box or the display board does not state a floor rating, treat it as wall tile. The second check is slip resistance on any floor that gets wet; a glossy glaze belongs on a wall, not in front of a sink.

The decision line: backsplash, shower wall, tub surround or feature wall, choose on colour and glaze and buy ceramic. Floor in a kitchen, entry or bathroom, read the PEI number first, and when in doubt step up to porcelain. Our porcelain vs ceramic guide covers the trade-offs in more detail.

Sizes and formats we keep on the wall

3x6 and 2x8 subway, 4x4 and 6x6 squares, 2x10 picket and elongated hex, 10x16 and 12x24 wall formats for bathrooms, and 12x12 and 13x13 floor ceramics that still cover a lot of rental and basement work. Glossy, satin and matte glazes are shown side by side so you can see how each reads under light; a handmade-look glossy subway is a very different wall than a flat matte one.

Where not to use ceramic

  • Shower floors, mudrooms and front entries: water, grit and boots will wear through a ceramic glaze. Use porcelain.
  • Outdoors anywhere in the GTA or Simcoe County: ceramic absorbs water and will spall in a freeze-thaw winter.
  • Commercial floors: lobbies, restaurants and retail need PEI 4 to 5 porcelain.
  • Over an unprepared wall: ceramic hides nothing. A wavy drywall or an old tile surface needs to be flattened or removed first, or the joints will telegraph it.

Setting materials and installation

Ceramic wall tile goes up with a standard polymer-modified thin-set from our tile setting materials range, a waterproof membrane in wet areas, and a sanded or unsanded grout depending on the joint width. Our in-house crews install backsplashes, bathroom walls and ceramic floors across Mississauga, Barrie, Toronto and the surrounding areas; if you are doing the backsplash yourself we will lay out the pattern and the box count with you at the counter.

Ceramic tile near you

Visit the Mississauga store at 700 Dundas St E, 20 minutes from downtown Toronto, or the Barrie store at 112 Saunders Rd off Highway 400, and bring a cabinet door or a countertop sample so the glaze is matched in real light. Still Have Questions?

Quick answers to the questions homeowners ask most before buying.

Can ceramic tile be used on floors?
Only floor-rated ceramic, PEI 3 or higher, and only in lighter-traffic rooms such as powder rooms, laundry rooms and bedrooms. Wall ceramic (PEI 1 and 2) will chip and wear on a floor. For kitchens, entries and bathrooms with showers, porcelain is the safer floor.
What is the difference between ceramic and porcelain tile?
Porcelain is pressed harder and fired hotter, so it absorbs almost no water and resists wear. Ceramic is lighter, easier to cut and comes in a wider range of glazes and colours, which makes it the better wall and backsplash tile. The price difference is smaller than most people expect; the use difference is not.
Is ceramic tile good for a shower?
On shower walls, yes, over a proper waterproof membrane. On the shower floor, no; use a matte porcelain or a mosaic with the slip resistance a wet floor needs.
What size ceramic tile is best for a kitchen backsplash?
3x6 subway is still the most common, with 2x8, 2x10 picket and 4x4 squares close behind. Larger wall formats such as 10x16 reduce grout lines on a full-height backsplash. Bring a cabinet door to the store and we will set the options against it.
Can ceramic tile be installed outdoors?
No. Ceramic absorbs water and will crack or flake in a freeze-thaw winter anywhere in the GTA or Simcoe County. Use frost-rated porcelain pavers outside.
Do you install ceramic tile in Mississauga and Barrie?
Yes. Squarefoot Flooring's own crews install backsplashes, bathroom walls and ceramic floors from both stores, covering Mississauga, Barrie, Toronto and the surrounding areas.
