Tile Store Serving Toronto, Mississauga & Barrie
Squarefoot Flooring carries one of the most comprehensive tile selections in Ontario - over 11,000 products across porcelain, ceramic, natural stone, mosaic, and outdoor tile at our Mississauga and Barrie showrooms. Our Mississauga location at 700 Dundas St E is about 20 minutes from downtown Toronto via the QEW and serves homeowners and contractors across Etobicoke, Brampton, Port Credit, Erin Mills, Streetsville, Meadowvale, and Cooksville. Our Barrie location at 112 Saunders Road serves Innisfil, Angus, Orillia, Collingwood, Midland, and all of Simcoe County.
In simple terms: tile is the most permanent, most durable surface you can install - and seeing it at full scale in person is the only way to make the right decision.
Most customers searching for a tile store near them want to compare large format porcelain and stone options in person before committing. A 24x48 porcelain slab reads completely differently in a showroom than it does as a 4-inch sample card. Both our showrooms carry installed tile displays across multiple formats, finishes, and applications - floors, walls, and showers - you can walk on and touch before you buy.
If you're also comparing tile against vinyl alternatives, see our full flooring and tile range before deciding. Looking for discounted tile? Browse our tile sale for clearance and sale-priced options across porcelain, ceramic, and stone.
Shop by tile type:
Porcelain Tile - the most durable tile for floors, walls, and outdoor use
Ceramic Tile - versatile, affordable, ideal for wall applications and backsplashes
Natural Stone - marble, travertine, slate, and limestone for premium applications
Mosaic Tile - feature walls, shower niches, backsplashes, and decorative accents
Outdoor Tile - frost-resistant porcelain and stone for Ontario patios
Indoor Tile - full range of indoor tile formats and finishes
How to Choose the Right Tile for Your Space
Tile selection comes down to four variables: the application (floor, wall, wet area, or outdoor), the format size, the finish, and the installation requirements. Getting any one of these wrong leads to a tile that underperforms, requires excessive maintenance, or fails within the first few years.
Porcelain vs. Ceramic - Which Do You Need?
This is the most common question we answer in-store, and the answer is almost always the same: porcelain for floors, high-moisture areas, and any outdoor application; ceramic for walls, backsplashes, and budget-conscious projects where the tile won't take foot traffic.
Porcelain is fired at higher temperatures and pressed at greater density than ceramic. The result is a harder, less porous tile with a water absorption rate below 0.5% - compared to ceramic's 3% or more. That difference is what makes porcelain appropriate for outdoor freeze-thaw conditions, shower floors, and kitchen floors where water exposure is constant. See our full porcelain tile range.
Ceramic is softer, easier to cut, and significantly more affordable. For bathroom wall tile, kitchen backsplashes, and feature walls where the tile isn't taking impact or water saturation, ceramic is the right and more cost-effective specification. See our ceramic tile range.
Tile Format and Size - The Decision That Changes the Room
Format size is the tile decision that most dramatically affects how a room reads. Small mosaic formats on a floor create movement and visual complexity. Large format porcelain at 24x48 creates a clean, expansive surface with minimal grout lines. Neither is universally better - the right format depends on the room size, the design intent, and the subfloor conditions.
Large format tile (24x24 and above) is the dominant choice for open-concept Ontario kitchens and main floor bathroom renovations right now. The reduced grout lines create a cleaner visual at scale. Large format tile requires a flatter subfloor and a medium-bed mortar - standard thin-set won't provide the full back coverage required. Our team will specify the correct mortar before installation.
Standard format (12x24, 12x12) is the most practical choice for most bathroom floors, shower walls, and laundry rooms. It handles subfloor variation better than large format and installs faster.
Mosaic formats (1x1 to 4x4) work where standard tile can't - shower floors where slope and drain placement require small cuts, decorative niches, and accent bands. See our mosaic tile range.
Tile for Ontario Kitchens
Kitchen floors and kitchen backsplashes have different requirements. For kitchen floors, the specification is porcelain at 24x24 or larger with a matte or textured finish - glossy finishes show every scratch and wet footprint in a kitchen environment. For backsplashes, ceramic or porcelain in subway, stacked, or mosaic formats at whatever scale suits your cabinetry. Both showrooms carry extensive kitchen tile displays you can see in a simulated kitchen context.
Tile for Ontario Bathrooms
Bathroom tile selection is the decision most Ontario homeowners spend the most time on. The combination of floor tile, wall tile, and shower tile - matched in scale, tone, and finish - is what determines whether a bathroom renovation looks like a magazine shoot or just looks clean.
The most important specification in any shower is the waterproofing membrane beneath the tile - not the tile itself. Tile is not waterproof. The membrane is. A failed or missing membrane is the number one cause of structural water damage in Ontario bathrooms. We carry Schluter Kerdi, Prova, and Mapei waterproofing systems at both showrooms. We also carry Schluter Ditra uncoupling membranes for tile over concrete and plywood subfloors. Completing a full bathroom renovation? Outdoor Tile for Ontario Patios and Exterior Spaces
Not all tile is rated for Ontario outdoor conditions. Freeze-thaw cycles crack standard indoor porcelain within the first winter when water infiltrates the tile body and expands. Frost-resistant porcelain with a water absorption rate below 0.5% and a slip-resistant finish is the correct specification for Mississauga and Barrie patios, pool surrounds, and exterior steps. See our outdoor tile range for frost-rated options in stock.
Tile for Commercial Spaces
Commercial tile applications require higher PEI (Porcelain Enamel Institute) wear ratings, slip-resistance ratings for public spaces, and in most cases specific installation methods for heavy rolling loads. We supply commercial tile for offices, retail, restaurants, healthcare, and hospitality environments across the GTA and Simcoe County. For commercial project quotes, email sales@squarefootflooring.com directly.
Tile Installation Materials - Everything You Need
Tile is only as good as what's underneath it and what holds it in place. We carry the full range of professional installation materials at both showrooms.
Mortar and thin-set - Mapei, Chembond, and Tec mortars across standard, polymer-fortified, large-format, and lightweight formulations. Grout - Mapei sanded, unsanded, and epoxy grout across the full colour range. Waterproofing membranes - Schluter Kerdi, Prova, and Mapei systems for showers and wet areas. Uncoupling membranes - Schluter Ditra for tile over concrete and plywood. Infloor heating - electric heating membranes for bathroom and kitchen tile installations. Self-leveling compounds for subfloor prep.
Professional Tile Installation Across Toronto, Mississauga & Barrie
We have our own installation team and don't subcontract. We install porcelain, ceramic, natural stone, and mosaic tile for residential and commercial projects across Toronto, the GTA, and Simcoe County. Our installation services include subfloor assessment and prep, waterproofing membrane installation, large-format mortar specification, tile installation, grouting, and all trim and transition work.
Why this matters: a tile retailer who separates product from installation creates accountability gaps when something goes wrong. When we supply and install, there's one point of contact for the full project.

Common Questions About Tile
What is the best tile for Ontario kitchen floors?
Porcelain tile at 24x24 or larger with a matte or textured finish is the professional specification for Ontario kitchen floors. It's harder, less porous, and more resistant to daily cleaning and spill exposure than ceramic. A matte finish hides scratches and wet footprints better than polished or glazed finishes in a kitchen environment. See our porcelain tile range for kitchen floor options.
What tile is best for bathroom walls and shower enclosures?
Porcelain or ceramic tile for wall applications in bathrooms - both work because walls don't take the same impact and abrasion as floors. The critical specification is the waterproofing membrane beneath the tile in any shower or wet area. Without a proper waterproofing membrane, water eventually penetrates the grout and tile assembly and causes structural damage. Our team specifies the membrane system as part of every shower tile installation.
What tile works for Ontario outdoor patios?
Frost-resistant porcelain with a water absorption rate below 0.5% and a slip-resistant finish. Standard indoor porcelain and all ceramic tile will crack when water enters the tile body and freezes. Our outdoor tile range is specifically selected for Ontario freeze-thaw conditions.
How much does tile cost in Ontario?
Tile materials range from $2.00 to $20.00+ per square foot depending on format, brand, and material. Installation adds $5.00 to $12.00+ per square foot depending on format complexity, subfloor conditions, and waterproofing requirements. Use our cost calculator for a project estimate or email sales@squarefootflooring.com for a free quote.
Do I need a special mortar for large format tile?
Yes. Large format tile (anything over 15 inches in any dimension) requires a medium-bed or large-format mortar - not standard thin-set. Large tiles need full back coverage without voids, which standard thin-set can't achieve at the required bed thickness. Using the wrong mortar under large format tile is the most common cause of tile lippage and long-term bond failure. We carry the correct large-format mortars at both showrooms and our team will specify the right product for your tile before installation begins.
Do you install tile in Toronto?
Yes. Our own installation team covers Toronto, Mississauga, Barrie, and surrounding areas for residential and commercial tile installation. We handle the full scope from subfloor assessment and waterproofing to finished grouting and trim. Book your tile installation here or email sales@squarefootflooring.com to get started.
