Why Solid Hardwood Stands Out

The floor people mean when they say real hardwood

Solid hardwood flooring is one piece of wood from top to bottom. Most of the solid boards we carry are a full 3/4 inch thick, nailed to a wood subfloor, and can be sanded and refinished many times over the life of the house.

In simple terms: solid hardwood is a wood floor you can sand and refinish again and again, as long as it goes on a wood subfloor on or above grade.

Species and widths

  • Red oak: warm tones and an open grain.
  • White oak: cooler tones and a tighter grain.
  • Maple: a lighter wood with a quiet grain.
  • Hickory: strong colour variation and a rustic character.
  • Birch, cherry and black walnut, plus exotic species including jatoba, teak and tigerwood.

Widths: classic 2-1/4, 3-1/4 and 4-1/4 inch strip and plank, with 5 inch boards from Bruce, Canadian Standard and Tosca. Many boards come in random lengths, some up to 84 inches, so the floor shows natural joint spacing. Bruce also offers 5/16 inch solid strip.

The specs that matter

  • Grade: cleaner grades (such as Prestige or Select and Better) show fewer knots and a more even colour; character grades show more knots and variation.
  • Finish: smooth, wire brushed and hand scraped surfaces, in ultra matte, satin and semi gloss sheens.
  • Warranty: mostly 25 or 35 year residential finish warranties.

Where solid hardwood works

Main floors, bedrooms, hallways, dining rooms and stairs, over a wood subfloor on or above grade.

Where solid does not belong: concrete slabs, basements, condos and floors with in-floor heating. For those, engineered hardwood gives you a real wood surface with a core built for those conditions. Bathrooms and laundry rooms need a waterproof floor such as vinyl plank or porcelain tile. Our advice: on a wood subfloor on or above grade, solid is a good choice; anywhere else, choose engineered.

Solid hardwood brands

  • Appalachian: Signature and Verita, in white oak, red oak and hard maple, mostly 2-1/4 to 4-1/4 inch.
  • Bruce: Dundee, Natural Choice, Westchester, Waltham and Kennedale, in oak, maple and hickory.
  • Wickham: red oak and maple in 2-1/4, 3-1/4 and 4-1/4 inch.
  • Canadian Standard: white oak, maple and teak.
  • Sunca: jatoba, tauari Brazilian oak, sucupira and tigerwood.
  • Also on display: Tosca, Grandeur, Weiss and NAF.

Still Have Questions?

Quick answers to the questions homeowners ask most before buying.

What is solid hardwood flooring?
Solid hardwood is one piece of wood from top to bottom, mostly 3/4 inch thick in our range. It is nailed to a wood subfloor and can be sanded and refinished many times.
What grade of hardwood should I choose?
Cleaner grades, such as Prestige or Select and Better, show fewer knots and a more even colour. Character grades show more knots and colour variation, which many people like in a rustic room.
Can solid hardwood go in a basement or over concrete?
No. Solid hardwood belongs on a wood subfloor on or above grade. For concrete, basements, condos or in-floor heating, choose engineered hardwood.
Red oak or white oak?
Red oak has warmer tones and a more open grain. White oak has cooler tones and a tighter grain. Both are on display in our stores, so you can compare them side by side.
What width should I choose?
2-1/4 and 3-1/4 inch boards give a classic strip look; 4-1/4 and 5 inch boards read as plank. Wider boards suit larger, open rooms.
Do you refinish hardwood floors?
Yes. Our crews sand and refinish hardwood floors on site, including restaining and repairs, and supply and install hardwood stairs.
Do you install and deliver solid hardwood?
Yes. Our in-house crews install across Ontario, and we deliver anywhere in Canada, to your door or to the nearest transport company terminal.
Where can I see solid hardwood?
At our Mississauga store at 700 Dundas St E, Unit 3-4 (905-277-2227) and our Barrie store at 112 Saunders Rd, Units 1-4 (705-726-2272).
