Why Empire Oak Stands Out

Ask any installer what separates good engineered hardwood from the rest and they will point at the wear layer, not the price tag.

In simple terms: Shaw Floors Empire Oak pairs a real oak top layer with an engineered core built for stability. It gives you a genuine wood floor that can go where solid planks cannot, and we carry and install it ourselves.

It is real oak, a warm, familiar grain that takes stain well and suits almost any room. The real advantage is underneath: a dimensionally stable engineered core that stays flat through Ontario's dry winters and humid summers, where a solid plank would cup or gap. That is why it may be suitable for on-grade or above-grade use, and some collections for below-grade use when approved, including basements and concrete slabs, and over in-floor radiant heat, places solid hardwood cannot. The surface is wire-brushed, which lifts the grain for texture and quietly hides everyday wear. Micro-bevelled edges give each plank a defined line and absorb the seasonal movement of a wood floor. Colours in the range include Carnegie, Ashlee Grey, Morgan, Cabot, and Astor.

Decision line: choose Empire Oak when you want genuine hardwood that will stay flat over a slab or in a basement.

Installation is in-house and never subcontracted, across the Toronto and Mississauga area up to Barrie and Simcoe County. Engineered board can be glued over a slab, floated, or nailed down, so we assess the subfloor, test for moisture, and pick the right method. Browse our projects or the hardwood installation page.

It is worth seeing Empire Oak in person before deciding. Visit either store, contact us to confirm current stock, and see more in the engineered hardwood range. Since it works over radiant heat, it goes well with the in-floor heating membranes we carry. For the full Shaw Floors range, see our Shaw Floors page.

Still Have Questions?

Quick answers about this collection before you buy.

What is Shaw Floors Empire Oak?
Shaw Floors Empire Oak is engineered hardwood, a layer of real oak bonded to a stable multi-ply core. It looks and sands like solid wood but stays flat over concrete, in basements, and through Ontario's humidity. Squarefoot Flooring carries it and installs it with our own crew.
Can Empire Oak go in a basement or over radiant heat?
Yes. Unlike solid hardwood, Empire Oak is rated for use on, above, or below grade, including basements and over concrete slabs and over in-floor radiant heat, because the cross-layered core resists the movement that affects solid wood. It still needs a flat, dry subfloor and proper acclimation, which we handle on install.
Where can I see Empire Oak near me?
You can see Shaw Floors Empire Oak at both Squarefoot Flooring showrooms, in Mississauga at 700 Dundas St E, Unit 3-4, and in Barrie at 112 Saunders Rd, Units 1-4. Grain and finish read differently across a full floor, so we recommend seeing a sample first.
