Older Ontario homes rarely have a perfectly flat subfloor, and a lot of imported flooring is fussy about that, or arrives on a long supply chain that stalls a project. Toucan's rigid SPC core is built to sit over an imperfect subfloor and is fully waterproof, and the brand behind it now manufactures in Ontario, which shortens the supply line.
In simple terms: Toucan is the flooring brand of Triforest, a Canadian-headquartered manufacturer of laminate, SPC vinyl, and panel products. In 2025 Triforest opened Canada's first domestic SPC flooring plant in Ajax, Ontario, and it has produced laminate there since 2023. At Squarefoot we carry the Toucan range across SPC vinyl, water-resistant laminate, and engineered hardwood. It sits in the value-to-mid part of the market, which makes it a sensible pick for rentals, basements, whole-floor replacements, and budget-conscious renovations where you still want a waterproof, durable floor.
The construction is sound for the price. The laminate runs an AC4 wear rating on a high-density HDF core with embossed-in-register texture, the SPC is a rigid, fully waterproof stone-plastic composite, and the line is CARB2 compliant and made in ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified facilities. Toucan laminate carries a lifetime residential and 15-year light commercial warranty. The trade-off to know: like all laminate and SPC, these floors are not refinishable, so a worn plank is replaced rather than sanded.
Toucan SPC vinyl
SPC is the core of the range and the reason to look at Toucan. It is a rigid vinyl plank with a stone-plastic composite core that is 100 percent waterproof and stable enough to go over a subfloor that is not perfectly flat, which suits basements, kitchens, bathrooms, and rental turnovers. The SPC plank series run across a range of wood looks (SPC4, SPC6, SPC7, and SPC9 carry the widest colour selection), and the Toucan Looselay line is a loose-lay vinyl for spaces where a glue-free, easily lifted floor is useful.
Decision line: for a waterproof floor over an uneven or below-grade subfloor, SPC is the practical choice, and the wider series give the most colour options.
Toucan water-resistant laminate
The laminate range is AC4-rated on a water-resistant HDF core with realistic embossed-in-register wood grain. It is the harder-wearing, lower-cost choice for dry and lower-traffic main rooms. The series include TF66, TF80, TF83, the TF6 EIR textured line, and the Matt Handscraped finish for a more tactile surface.
Decision line: choose Toucan laminate for a durable, budget-friendly floor in bedrooms and dry living areas, and step up to SPC where the space can see water.
Toucan engineered hardwood
For a real wood surface, Toucan offers two engineered hardwood lines, Studio White and Towne. Engineered construction gives a genuine wood wear layer with more stability than solid wood through Ontario's seasonal humidity swing.
Decision line: choose engineered hardwood when you want a real wood floor above grade, and SPC or laminate when waterproofing or budget is the priority.
Why Toucan works in Ontario homes
Toucan is the value play that does not give up the things that matter. SPC is fully waterproof for basements, condos, and slabs, and it tolerates the uneven subfloors common in older Toronto and Barrie homes. SPC also pairs with in-floor heating. With Triforest now producing in Ajax, the supply chain for the Canadian market is shorter than fully imported lines. If you are comparing options, vinyl vs laminate and is flooring waterproof explain where each belongs. We can confirm the wear rating and waterproof spec of a specific Toucan collection for your room before you order.
Installation by our own crew
Toucan sells largely through dealers and online, so the advantage of buying it at Squarefoot is that you see it in a showroom and have it installed properly. We install Toucan with our own in-house team, residential and commercial, not subcontractors. SPC and laminate both need a flat subfloor, so we handle the subfloor prep and levelling that older Ontario homes often need, plus moisture barriers, the floating install, and trim. See our vinyl, laminate, and hardwood installation pages, and browse our projects for completed work.
