The detail behind that: It is real hickory, dramatic grain, natural colour variation, and the hardest common domestic species. On the Janka scale Hickory runs about 1820, harder than oak and a strong choice for high-traffic rooms. The wear layer is 2mm of real wood, enough for one careful refinish down the road. Stability comes from the build: a cross-layered engineered core that takes the seasonal swing in stride instead of telegraphing it into the floor. That is why it may be suitable for on-grade or above-grade use, and some collections for below-grade use when approved, including basements and concrete slabs, places solid hardwood cannot. Planks run 7 1/2 inches wide, a wide-plank look that shows off the grain. A low-sheen finish keeps dust and footprints from showing. Micro-bevelled edges define each plank and disguise the small seasonal movement every wood floor has. It carries a 35-year residential and lifetime structural warranty.
Installation is in-house and never subcontracted, across the Toronto and Mississauga area up to Barrie and Simcoe County. Can Coastline Hickory go in a basement or over radiant heat?
Yes. Unlike solid hardwood, Coastline Hickory is rated for use on, above, or below grade, including basements and over concrete slabs, because the cross-layered core resists the movement that affects solid wood. It still needs a flat, dry subfloor and proper acclimation, which we handle on install.
Can Coastline Hickory be sanded and refinished?
Yes. Coastline Hickory has a 2mm real-wood wear layer, thick enough to sand and refinish at least once over its life.
How hard is Coastline Hickory, and will it dent?
The hickory surface sits around 1820 on the Janka hardness scale, well above the red oak benchmark of 1290, so it resists dents and busy traffic well. No wood floor is dent-proof, but the wear layer and finish do most of the work.
