Mosaic Tiles in Mississauga & Barrie | Glass, Stone & Marble

Mosaic Tiles in Mississauga & Barrie | Glass, Stone & Marble

Mosaics are the tile you reach for when the surface is small, curved or wet: shower floors that need grip and slope, backsplashes behind a range, niches, fireplace faces and the strip that ties a bathroom together. Glass, marble, pebble, porcelain and metal mixes come mesh-mounted on 12x12 sheets, and the full range is on the boards at our Mississauga store on Dundas St E and our Barrie store on Saunders Rd next to the field tile it pairs with.

Why Mosaic Stands Out

A mosaic is usually the last tile chosen on a project and the first one people notice. It is also where DIY installs go wrong most often, because small tiles, mesh backing and the wrong mortar or grout do not forgive mistakes. Choosing the right material for the spot solves most of it.

In simple terms: mosaic tile is small-format tile, from 3/8 inch squares to 2 inch hexagons and long picket pieces, mounted on a mesh or paper sheet so it installs a square foot at a time. The material of the pieces decides where it can go.

Mosaics by project

  • Shower floors: the number one mosaic job. The many grout joints give grip and let the tile follow the slope to the drain. Use porcelain, matte stone or pebble mosaics here, never polished glass or polished marble.
  • Kitchen backsplashes: glass, marble and mixed-material mosaics behind the range and sink. Glass bounces light around a dark kitchen; stone mosaics warm up a white one.
  • Shower niches and feature strips: a band of mosaic inside a porcelain shower breaks up a large wall without a full feature wall.
  • Fireplace surrounds and feature walls: stacked stone, linear glass and marble herringbone mosaics give a focal wall its texture.
  • Floors in powder rooms and entries: marble basketweave, hex and penny rounds in a honed finish are classic small-floor choices.

Materials and what each needs

  • Glass: brightest and easiest to clean; needs a white mortar (grey shows through) and a glass-rated thin-set. Not for floors unless specifically rated.
  • Marble and natural stone: seal before grouting or the grout will stain the stone. Honed on floors, polished on walls.
  • Porcelain: the workhorse for shower floors and wet areas, with the slip resistance and water absorption to match.
  • Pebble: real river stones on mesh for shower floors and spa bathrooms; use a flexible grout and seal well.
  • Metal and mixed: accent strips and backsplashes; check whether the metal pieces are rated for wet areas before putting them in a shower.

Shapes on the boards

Subway and brick-set, 1x1 and 2x2 squares, hexagon from 1 inch to 2 inch, penny round, picket, chevron and herringbone, basketweave, linear stacked strips and fish scale. Set the mosaic sheet against the field tile it will sit beside; the grout colour you choose for the mosaic should match the field tile joints or the two will read as separate surfaces.

Install details that decide the result

Flatten the substrate; mosaic sheets telegraph every bump. Use the mortar the material calls for, white for glass and light stone, and comb it with a 3/16 inch V-notch so it does not squeeze up through the joints. Cut the mesh, not the tile, wherever you can. Grout with an unsanded or fine-sanded grout on polished faces and glass, and keep shower floors on a waterproof membrane with a proper pre-slope. Our own crews install mosaic showers, backsplashes and feature walls across Mississauga, Barrie, Toronto and the surrounding areas, and the setting materials are sold from the same counter.

Mosaic tile near you

Bring the field tile or a photo of the room to the Mississauga store at 700 Dundas St E, 20 minutes from downtown Toronto, or the Barrie store at 112 Saunders Rd off Highway 400, and we will match the mosaic, the grout colour and the trim in one visit. Local pages: tile in Mississauga, tile in Barrie, tile in Toronto. Field tile pairs well with our porcelain and natural stone ranges.

Still Have Questions?

Quick answers to the questions homeowners ask most before buying.

What mosaic tile is best for a shower floor?
A matte porcelain, honed stone or pebble mosaic with small pieces and plenty of grout joints, so it grips wet feet and follows the slope to the drain. Avoid polished glass and polished marble on a shower floor.
Can glass mosaic be used on a floor?
Only if the manufacturer rates it for floors, and even then keep it to low-traffic dry areas. Glass mosaics are designed for backsplashes, shower walls and feature walls.
Do marble mosaics need to be sealed?
Yes, before grouting and again after. Unsealed marble absorbs grout pigment and will look dirty from day one. We carry the sealers and will show you how to apply them.
What grout should I use with mosaic tile?
Unsanded or fine-sanded grout for joints under 1/8 inch and for polished or glass faces that sanded grout would scratch. For pebble and shower floors, a flexible grout holds up better. Match the colour to the field tile joints.
How do I cut mosaic sheets?
Cut the mesh between tiles with a utility knife wherever the layout allows. Where a tile itself has to be cut, use a wet saw for stone and porcelain and a glass-scoring tool or wet saw with a glass blade for glass.
Do you install mosaic backsplashes and showers?
Yes. Squarefoot Flooring's in-house crews install mosaic backsplashes, shower floors, niches and feature walls from our Mississauga and Barrie stores, serving Toronto and the surrounding areas.
