Why Schluter Stands Out

What Schluter is for

Tile itself is hard-wearing, but it fails at the parts you cannot see: a subfloor that moves and cracks the grout, water that gets behind a shower wall, an exposed edge that chips. Schluter is a family of systems that solve those problems before the tile goes down. It is not a tile brand; it is what sits under and around the tile to keep it flat, dry, and protected for the life of the installation. Our crews use Schluter on most of the tile work we do, because it is the difference between a floor that lasts a few years and one that lasts decades.

Uncoupling membranes for crack protection

The DITRA membrane is a thin orange matting that goes between the subfloor and the tile. It lets the subfloor move a little with the seasons without that movement reaching the tile, which is the most common cause of cracked tile and failed grout lines on floors. It also manages moisture under the tile and supports the load across the floor. On a wood subfloor, or over a concrete slab that may still carry moisture, this layer is what keeps a tile floor intact. DITRA-XL is a thicker version used to bring a tile floor level with an adjacent hardwood or other floor.

Waterproofing and shower systems

The KERDI line is Schluter's waterproofing. KERDI membrane bonds to the wall and floor behind the tile so water never reaches the framing, and the KERDI-BOARD panel gives a ready-to-tile, waterproof substrate for shower walls and benches. For a full custom shower, the shower kits bring together a sloped tray, a waterproof curb, and a drain, so the whole wet area is sealed as one system rather than patched together. Linear channel drains are available for a clean single-slope shower floor. This is the right approach for a curbless or barrier-free shower, where getting the waterproofing right is not optional.

Heated tile floors

DITRA-HEAT combines the uncoupling membrane with channels that hold an electric heating cable, so you get a warm tile floor and crack protection in the same layer. It suits a bathroom, an ensuite, a kitchen, or an entry where a cold tile floor in winter is the main complaint. Because the heat and the uncoupling are built into one membrane, the floor build-up stays thin, which helps at doorways and transitions.

Edge profiles and transitions

Schluter edge profiles finish a tile edge cleanly and protect it from chipping, in brushed metal, bright metal, and colour-matched PVC. They cover the outside corner of a tiled wall or backsplash, the top edge of a wainscot, the nose of a tiled stair, and the joint where tile meets hardwood, carpet, or a different floor. Movement-joint profiles let a large floor expand and contract without cracking. These are the small details that separate a professional tile job from a rough one, and they come in finishes to match or contrast with the tile.

Where it fits: home and commercial

At home, Schluter is behind almost every tile floor, shower, heated bathroom, and backsplash we install. For commercial work, the same systems handle the demands of a busy floor, a wet area that has to pass inspection, and the movement of a large slab. Whatever the project, the goal is the same: a tile installation that stays flat, stays dry, and stays put. If you are planning a tile project, bring your drawings or measurements to either store and our team will spec the right membranes, waterproofing, and profiles to go with the tile, and our in-house crews can install the whole system.

In simple terms: Schluter is the system under and around your tile. Use an uncoupling membrane so the floor does not crack, waterproofing and a shower kit so water stays out of the walls, DITRA-HEAT if you want a warm floor, and edge profiles to finish the corners and transitions. Get those right and the tile takes care of itself.

Common Questions About Schluter Flooring

Quick answers about Schluter, materials, and shopping at Squarefoot Flooring.

What is Schluter used for?
Schluter makes the systems that go under and around tile to keep it flat, dry, and protected: uncoupling membranes that stop a floor from cracking, waterproofing and shower kits for wet areas, heated-floor systems, and metal and PVC edge profiles that finish tile edges and transitions. It is not a tile brand; it is what makes a tile installation last.
What is Schluter DITRA?
DITRA is an uncoupling membrane that goes between the subfloor and the tile. It lets the subfloor move with the seasons without that movement reaching the tile, which is the most common cause of cracked tile and grout on floors. It also manages moisture under the tile. DITRA-HEAT adds channels for an electric heating cable to make a warm tile floor.
Do I need Schluter for a tile shower?
For a tile shower, waterproofing is essential, and the Schluter KERDI system is one of the most reliable ways to do it. KERDI membrane and board seal the walls and floor so water rarely reaches the framing, and the shower kits combine a sloped tray, curb, and drain as one sealed system. This is especially important for a curbless or barrier-free shower.
Can you install Schluter systems for me?
Yes. Our own in-house crews install Schluter uncoupling membranes, waterproofing, shower systems, heated floors, and edge profiles with the tile, for homes and commercial projects across Mississauga, Barrie, and the surrounding areas. Bring your drawings or measurements to either store and we will spec the right system and quote supply and install.
