Roca Tile's Avalon Arena is a 24" x 24" glazed porcelain tile in a natural stone look, with the tonal shift of split stone, made in Spain and 20 mm thick. Water absorption of 0.5% or less is the figure that makes it a porcelain rather than a ceramic. The trade-off with any glazed tile is that the colour sits on the surface rather than running through the body, so a deep chip shows the biscuit underneath. The edges are rectified, cut square after firing, which lets a tiler close the joint to about an eighth of an inch. It also means the substrate has to be flat, because a tight joint leaves nowhere to hide a dip. Pair it with a matching bullnose or a metal trim at the edges, an uncoupling membrane over a concrete slab, and a large-format mortar, because a tile this size needs full coverage under it.
