A PVC-with-fiberglass backing is the workhorse of modular carpet: it holds each tile flat and perfectly square, so the joints stay tight and the floor does not shift underfoot. It is tufted at a 1/10 gauge for a dense, even surface. You can lay them in several patterns, including Ashlar, Brick, Quarter Turn, and Grid, and the pattern you choose changes the look and helps blend the tiles into a uniform floor.
