The detail behind that: Loose lay vinyl uses a dense, high-friction backing instead of glue or a click joint, so the planks simply lie flat and stay put by weight. It is fast to install and even faster to lift, which makes it a favourite for rentals, offices, and access-floor situations. The 20 mil wear layer puts it in heavy-residential, light-commercial territory, which is where vinyl earns its keep in a family home. On vinyl, that mil number is the best single predictor of how long the floor keeps looking new, more than thickness or price. Because it is 100% waterproof rather than just water-resistant, you can put it in the rooms that rule out wood and laminate, full baths, laundry rooms, kitchens, and basements.
