Why Stairs Stands Out

Start with the floor you are matching

The stairs are the most visible part of a flooring job, so the first decision is whether they should match the new floor exactly or contrast with it.

  • Vinyl and rigid-core stair tread and riser sets: made in the same colours as specific vinyl and rigid-core floors, from lines such as Fuzion, Woden, Grandeur, Purelux and Aquaplus. Some sets include the side return for open stairs. This is the way to make the stairs read as part of the floor.
  • Red oak stair treads: red oak treads, 10 inches deep, closed on both sides (36, 42 and 48 inch), open on one side (42 and 48 inch) or open on both sides (48 inch). Red oak takes stain well, so treads can be finished to suit hardwood or painted.

Posts and balusters

  • Red oak posts: 3 1/2 x 48 inch square posts in F1, F2 and F7 styles, a post with two grooves, and a 3 x 48 inch round style newel, with post screws to fix them.
  • Iron balusters: iron balusters in plain, single twist, double twist, knuckle and basket designs, for a 1/2 inch square opening, with flat, square and flexible shoes, angle tops for the stair slope, and handrail brackets.

Measure before you shop

Count the steps, measure the width of each tread and note whether either side is open. Treads and riser sets are sized and finished differently for open and closed ends, so this decides what goes on the order. For a railing, count the posts and measure the run of the rail.

Installed with the floor

Stairs take longer than the rooms around them, and most of the skill is in fitting and nosing. Our own crews install stairs as part of the flooring job. Bring your step count, a photo of the staircase and a sample of the floor to our Mississauga store on Dundas St E or our Barrie store on Saunders Rd.

Still Have Questions?

Quick answers to the questions homeowners ask most before buying.

Can you match my stairs to my new vinyl floor?
Yes, if the floor has a matching stair set. Vinyl and SPC tread and riser sets are made in the same colours as specific floors, so bring the name of your floor or a sample.
What wood stair treads do you carry?
Red oak treads, 10 inches deep: closed both sides in 36, 42 and 48 inch, open one side in 42 and 48 inch, and open both sides in 48 inch.
What balusters do you stock?
Iron balusters in plain, single twist, double twist, knuckle and basket designs, with shoes, angle tops and handrail brackets.
Do you install stairs?
Yes. Our own crews install stairs along with the floor, including treads, risers and nosing.
What do I need to measure before ordering?
The number of steps, the width of each tread, and whether either side of the staircase is open. For railings, the number of posts and the length of the rail.
