A stair tread is a full-thickness structural board (about 1" thick), while a stair overlay (stair cap) is thinner and fits over existing steps to update the look without removing the original staircase.
How do I measure my stairs for new treads?
Measure the width from stringer to stringer and depth from back riser to the front of the nosing. Add 1-2 inches for waste and precise on-site cutting.
