A flat, dry subfloor is essential. The 20 mil wear layer puts it in heavy-residential, light-commercial territory, which is where vinyl earns its keep in a family home. With vinyl, the mil rating tells you more about longevity than the overall thickness does. Because it is 100% waterproof rather than just water-resistant, you can put it in the rooms that rule out wood and laminate, full baths, laundry rooms, kitchens, and basements. Planks run up to 7 inches wide and 48 inches long, a wide-and-long format that reads like real wood. It is backed by a 20-year residential and 15-year light commercial warranty.
